Online bookmaker William Hill Australia has launched a new in-play betting feature called “Double Down” for horseracing punters using the company’s mobile app.
Timed to coincide with the ongoing Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival – a series of major thoroughbred races running through October and culminating with the Melbourne Cup on the first Tuesday of November – the launch of Double Down is intended to give horse racing bettors additional avenues to place wagers on races in progress.
In a statement announcing the feature’s launch, William Hill pointed to immediate access as the key benefit for punters using Double Down:
“No longer will they have to sit watching a race frustrated when their horse is positioned well and wish they could get set for more.”
When using the Double Down feature, players who have previously placed a wager on a given race can then click a single button to double their current stake – even as the race is ongoing. The wagering odds remain fixed at their pre-race figures, and William Hill subtracts a 10 percent fee from the total wager when Double Down is activated.
Although the concept behind Double Down constitutes in-play betting, as bettors are able to place wagers on races as they occur, William Hill has expressed no hesitation about rolling out the new product. This is a surprising stance for the U.K.-based company considering the Australian government’s insistence that in-play betting is now banned within the Commonwealth.
William Hill’s presence within Australia’s horseracing industry remains quite strong, and the company recently secured the exclusive right to live stream footage of all horseraces in New South Wales. In addition, William Hill holds the rights to web streaming of races in Victoria.
Warren Hebard, who serves as chief marketing officer for William Hill Australia, issued a statement confirming the company’s status as a leading figure for the country’s horseracing crowd:
“William Hill is the home of racing in Australia. Double Down is a product that no other bookmaker can or will offer and typifies the mentality of the William Hill brand, constantly pushing the boundaries in order to deliver the fastest and easiest betting experience for our customers.
With the release of Double Down we have been able to deliver an innovative new racing product that has huge appeal to both the recreational once a year Melbourne Cup Day punter through to the racing purist that bets most weekends.”
The Double Down feature is offered on a select group of thoroughbred races held across Australia. Punters simply search for the Double Down logo anywhere on the race card or “Next To Jump” list to find races with Double Down offered. The only bets which can be doubled through the feature are single fixed-odds win and each-way wagers.
The feature is only made available after 9 a.m. local time on race day, and players can only use Double Down on a single bet on any particular race. Players must select the Double Down option while placing their pre-race bet, and if a chosen horse is scratched from the race, the 10 percent commission fee will be refunded to player accounts.
