NRL Grand Final – Preview, Best Bets and Latest Odds

Sat, Oct 1, 3:30pm by Christopher Duffy

This year’s minor premiers, Melbourne Storm, stand in the way of a Cronulla Sharks side chasing history in the NRL Grand Final. Cronulla are on the cusp of their first ever NRL Premiership and will fight it out with the Storm in front of what is now a sold out crowd in Sydney. After topping the ladder for much of the season, Cronulla’s form may have dipped prior to the Finals but since then they have been a rejuvenated side. The Storm will rely on their experience to spoil the Sharks party.

Sportsbet give the edge to the men from Melbourne heading into the Grand Final. With a squad filled with big match experience from finals footy, Origin and Internationals, they are worthy of a price of $1.85. Throughout the year the Storm have been what their opponents have struggled to be, consistent. Their game plan hasn’t changed much and they will look to stifle the Sharks through resilient and determined defence. Melbourne may lack some of the creativity in attack of other sides in the competition but they have shown at times that they can excel in that area as well.

The Sharks dismantling of the North Queensland Cowboys last week in their Preliminary Final should act as a blueprint of how they can beat the Storm. Both the Storm and Cowboys are strong defensive units but if Cronulla can play to the same high tempo that they did, then they may have the beating of Melbourne. Both sides will be fatigued after a long, exhausting season but if the players aren’t able to get pumped up for a Grand Final then maybe they should question their career choices. On the verge of a first ever NRL Premiership the Sharks head in as underdogs priced at $2.00 with Sportsbet.

Alongside the NRL Premiership crown, players will also be vying for the Clive Churchill Medal for man of the match. Interestingly, it is Cronulla players who are represented higher in the market,  with James Maloney ($7.50), Ben Barba ($9.00) and Paul Gallen ($10.00) in the top five favourites. Despite having more players in the top five, it is the Storm who sit atop the favourites list with Cooper Cronk favourite at $5.00 and Cameron Smith second at $5.50. Both sides will be relying on these players to produce match winning performances while this gives the Grand Final another thrilling sub plot.

The addition of margin to the winning team brings the prices even closer between the two sides with Sportsbet. A Little Win of 1-12 points stands as favourites with Cronulla priced at $3.10 and Melbourne at $3.00. The likelihood a Big Win of 13+ points appears remote in particular for the Sharks who are priced at $5.50 while the Storm currently stand at $4.50. A draw after 80 minutes sending the match into extra time is priced at $15.00. This of course, happened 12 months ago between the Cowboys and the Broncos.

A long gruelling season all comes down to this 80 minutes between two sides that are arguably the best performing teams of the year. This match well come down to who can handle the pressure of the situation the best rather than the one who produces the best rugby league.
