The rivalry between the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets is one of the oldest in the NFL. Both teams were original members of the league back in 1960 with the Bills winning six of the past 10 games and lead the overall head-to-head record by 60–51. Onto the present and both teams desperately need a win to avoid having to dig themselves out of a 0-2 start.
Week one didn’t go to plan for either of these teams with the Bills going down 13-7 to the Ravens last week in Baltimore while the Jets lost a nail-biter at home to the Bengals, 23-22.
Rex Ryan’s team managed only 160 yards in offence in a performance that has been called embarrassing after an off season that included plenty of hype. That figure is the worst total in a decade and led to an unattractive loss to the Ravens.
The pressure continues to build on the Bills coach with Veteran Bills guard Richie Incognito telling reporters on Wednesday that it’s an ‘unspoken rule around here that it’s playoffs or bust’. Which is a big call considering the division has been ruled by the Patriots since the turn of the century.
The Jets were better, but ultimately suffered the same fate when Cincinnati took the lead with a field goal with only 40 seconds on the clock. New York’s defence didn’t let the Bengals develop any kind of a running game, and that could be a theme in Buffalo on Thursday night.
There is more than just the win on the line in this one. The rivalry is fueled primarily by the differences between New York City and the rest of the state of New York and also by the Bills who claim to be the only team in New York as the Jets actually play their home games in New Jersey.
On the field, I think the Jets will be too strong which will leave Rex Ryan and the rest of his coaching staff with plenty more questions to answer.
