Australia $1.43 to win opening ODI against Black Caps at SCG

Sun, Dec 4, 4:23am by Jake Equid

Preview: Australia v New Zealand, First ODI

Date and Time: Sunday, December 4, 2:20 pm AEDT

Venue: Sydney Cricket Ground,

TV: Channel Nine

The first of three matches in the Chappell-Hadlee ODI series will be played at the SCG in Sydney on Sunday with the Trans-Tasman rivals coming in with extremely constrasting form.

The hosts have just endured a 2-1 Test series defeat by South Africa at home while New Zealand completed a 2-0 Test clean sweep of Pakistan at home before hitting these shores.

In the 50-over format, the hosts last featured in an ODI series in September-October this year when they toured South Africa for five ODIs. The side was missing several regulars but were soundly beaten 5-0 by the Proteas.

The Aussies had gone into that series against South Africa following a 4-1 series win in Sri Lanka.

For the visitors, their last dose of ODI cricket came on their tour of India in October. The Black Caps went into the series decider in Visakhapatnam with the series level at 2-2 but India completely obliterated them with the ball on that occasion.

The five-match ODI series in India had been the only time when the Kiwis played ODI cricket this season following the World T20 earlier this year.

On the betting front, the bookies seem to be ignoring the recent form and are sticking with the home team. Sportsbet have installed the Aussies at $1.43 favourites to start the series with a win, while the Kiwis are at $2.86.

NSW speedster Pat Cummins looks set to play his first game in the green and gold for over 15 months. Uncapped WA all-rounder Hilton Cartwright was also named in the squad, as was Victorian Glenn Maxwell.

George Bailey is back in the side for the ODIs along with Aaron Finch while Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc continue to lead the attack. It’s important to note that both of those pacemen were unavailable for selection for the 5-0 whitewash in South Africa a few months ago.

For the Kiwis, they’re missing several players, namely experienced batsman Ross Taylor who is set to miss the series, recovering from eye surgery. They’ll also be without Adam Milne, Mitchell McClenaghan and the big-hitting Corey Anderson, who are all out injured.

On the batting front, the majority of the load will now fall at the feet of Martin Guptill, Tom Latham and Kane Williamson who will skipper the side. The familiar duo of Tim Southee and Trent Boult will lead their charge with the ball.

New Zealand beat Australia 2-1 in a three-match series when the two sides last met in New Zealand in February this year but they have never won a series on Australian soil and I don’t give this understrength team much chance.

In the head-to-head market, the Aussies are too short for the win at $1.43 so I’m taking Mitchell Starc to take the most wickets for Australia in this match at $3.10. It may be worth waiting until we are sure he’ll play in this match but he is in good form after taking 14 wickets from five innings in the recently completed Test series against South Africa and he’s back on his home ground here.

Suggested Bet: Starc to take most wickets for Australia:  $3.10
