Big Blue sees favourite Sydney looking to break Victory drought

Fri, Nov 4, 12:23pm by Jake Equid

Preview: A-League Round Five: Sydney FC v Melbourne Victory

Date and Time: Saturday November 5, 7:50pm AEDT

Venue: Allianz Stadium

TV:  Live on Fox Sports

Sydney FC aim to keep their perfect start to the season intact when they host one of their oldest rivals Melbourne Victory in the match of the round at Allianz Stadium.

Both sides are coming off wins with the Sky Blues coasting past Newcastle 2-0 and the Victory flexing some muscle on Melbourne Cup eve by put six goals into the Phoenix net.

The odds with Sportsbet have remained exactly the same all week with the Sky Blues as $1.85 favourite to continue their perfect start, Victory are big outsiders at $4 and the draw has my attention at $3.60.

It’s been a record breaking month for the home side who lead the league in scoring (11 goals) and became just the third team in history to open the season with four straight wins.

The last two teams to achieve that feat were Brisbane Roar in 2011-12 and Melbourne Victory in 2006-07 and both of those teams went on to win the Championship. Perhaps more pleasing for Graham Arnold and his staff though is the fact that they haven’t conceded a goal yet.

That defence looks set to come under their most pressure so far this season though with a Victory side who are fresh off a six goal haul against Wellington.

Victory have a tremendous goal-scoring record against their Sydney rivals. Kevin Muscat’s team have scored three or more goals in four of their last six meetings with Sydney – including a big 4-2 win at Allianz Stadium last year. The over 2.5 goals market is worth a play at $1.78.

That win was the latest in what is a very impressive record at this venue for the visitors, who’ve only lost four times in 17 games here. Furthermore, Sydney have not beaten the Victory since Australia Day in 2014. That’s nine consecutive league matches, with Melbourne winning four of them.

Here’s another crazy stat, Graham Arnold hasn’t won at home against a side from Victoria since he was coach of the Central Coast Mariners all the way back in 2012. I’m backing Melbourne to end Sydney’s perfect run and get a massive away point in this one.
