Could Mel Gibson parlay his recent success at the AACTA Awards into success in Hollywood’s awards season?
Momentum is building behind Gibson’s charge to possible Golden Globe and Academy Awards as Best Director on his movie Hacksaw Ridge, his critically acclaimed war epic that marked his return to feature film directing after a decade’s absence.
Gibson took out Best Direction at the AACTAs for Hacksaw Ridge, while it also won Best Film.
The blockbuster tells tale of an American decorated for bravery in World War II despite being a conscientious objector.
Sportsbet has Gibson at $7.50 to win the Golden Globe for his work on on the film, while they have suspended betting on the Australian-raised star winning another Oscar.
Success at the Golden Globes would repeat Gibson’s success of 22 years ago, when he scored an upset Best Director nod for his work on Braveheart. He then claimed Best Director at the Academy Awards later that year while the film won Best Picture.
Hacksaw Ridge is $7 to win Best Drama Picture at the Golden Globes, while it is $15 to win the Oscar for Best Picture.
Moonlight is $1.75 favourite to win the Golden Globe for Best Srama Picture, while La La Land is an unbackable $1.10 to win Best Comedy/Drama.
Two other ‘Aussies’ were among the Golden Globe nominees with Nicole Kidman an outsider at $7.50 for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Lion., while Joel Edgerton is nominated for Best Drama Actor for Loving, for which he is priced at odds of $7.50.
