South Africa favourites to seal series in Durban

Tue, Oct 4, 11:37am by Bren O'Brien

Preview: Third ODI, South Africa v Australia

Date and Time: Wednesday, October 5, 10:30 pm AEST

Venue: Kingsmead, Durban

TV: Fox Sports

Any confidence Australia gained from their dominant recent series win over Sri Lanka has quickly dissipated as the tourists face the possibility of a series defeat headed into the third ODI against South Africa at Durban on Wednesday.

Belted around the park by Quinton De Kock in the series opener, the Aussie fared little better at The Wanderers in Joburg on Sunday, where stand-in skipper Faf Du Plessis notched a better than run-a-ball century, as the hosts piled up 361.

The Aussies run chase never got warm, with only David Warner and Travis Head passing 50, as they were dismissed for 219 in just the 38th over.

The lack of success of the bowling attack at least has some excuses, with Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazelwood, Australias two best pace bowlers at the moment, sitting back in Australia resting up for the summer’.

John Hastings and Mitch Marsh have been left to do the bulk of the work, with Hastings claiming 3-57 in the last game to be the best of the Aussie bowlers. He is $4 favourite with Sportsbet to repeat the dose here, while Marsh, who took 2-68, is the value at $6.50.

Australia’s new ball pairing of Joe Mennie and Chris Tremain fared miserably on debut, with Mennie (1-82) compiling the worst figures for an Aussie bowler on debut of 0-82, while Tremain took 1-79.

Scott Boland is likely to come back in and is $5.50 for most wickets in Durban, while Adam Zampa, who has just one wicket in the series so far, is $4.33.

The overall match odds are now firmly in South Africa’s favour after they won both the opening games at around the $1.80 mark. The Proteas are $1.65 to win here, with the Aussies $2.26 to keep the series alive.

De Kock is $3.75 to top South Africa’s run scoring, having made 200 runs for the series so far, while Hashim Amla, who was surprisingly left out of the 2nd ODI after missing the first through injury, is $4.33 second favourite ahead of the in-form Du Plessis ($4.50) and opener Rilee Roussow ($4.50), who has scored 50s in both matches.

As for the Aussies’ leading run scorer, thats a bit of raffle, with Warner on top at $4, Steve Smith at $4.50, Usman Khawaja, who may pressure Aaron Finch out of a spot, at $4.50 along with Finch. Not a single Aussie batsman has passed 100 runs in total this series.

South Africa have been in imperious form, racking up massive run rates in both matches to date. That may change at Kingsmead where the Proteas have not passed 300 in an ODI in over 10 years.

This game looks to be much more on the bowlers’ terms, with South Africa having won the past three matches here, restricting their opposition to under 225 each time. Spin should play a much stronger role in this match, meaning Zampa’s odds of leading the Aussie wicket taker appeal. As does Imran Tahir, who has five wickets in two matches here, at $4.33.

Suggested Bet: Back Adam Zampa and Imran Tahir to be leading wicket takers for their teams at $4.33 apiece.
