UFC Betting update: Money comes for Whittaker to beat Brunson

Sat, Nov 26, 10:03am by Jake Equid

The UFC comes to Melbourne this weekend for the first time in 12 months and the local Aussie contingent are taking the spotlight both inside the octagon and in the betting markets.

It may be a mixture of hometown sentiment and the fact that Robert Whittaker has won five bouts in a row but Sportsbet has revealed on Friday that 83% of wages placed are on the Aussie to upset the American, Derek Brunson, who started the week at $1.64 but has now drifted out to $1.75.

The flow of money has seen Whittaker reeled into $2.08 from $2.25 for the clash. Punters are showing faith in Whittaker to cause an upset but it won’t be easy. Both fighters have great records, the American’s career currently stands at 16-3 and the Aussie’s is also impressive at 16-4.

Although Whittaker has been backed strongly he still looks set to start as the underdog. The same cannot be said for his compatriot, Jake Matthews who has also been backed strongly to win his bout and is the short priced favourite.

Melbourne boy, Matthews is currently as short as $1.33 with Sportsbet to defeat another American, Andrew Holbrook ($3.34).

At just 22, Matthews is expected to have a bright future in the sport, and the next chapter in fulfilling that hype comes this Sunday in the co-main event.

Not only will Matthews have the hometown support but he’ll also be buoyed by his record of 7-0 when fighting in Melbourne and he said he doesn’t intend to allow the tough American, Holbrook to snap that undefeated streak.

Sportsbet’s Will Byrne said “It’s a great card for UFC Melbourne with plenty of Aussies in action but all eyes will be on Whittaker and Brunson.’’

“Both men have near identical records going into the fight but the punters are tipping Whittaker to get the win with a little help from his home crowd.”

Suggested Bet: Take the Aussie double of Matthews into Whittaker: $2.70
