After a week of wet weather in Sydney and with showers continuing to fall, the mudlarks will be revelling in the conditions come Saturday. Already in the heavy range and unlikely to improve, there’s plenty of runners with wet track form.
In Race 2, a BM74 over 1100m for the three-year-olds, Noble Joey ($3 with Sportsbet) has had some early backing and his wet weather credentials could have something to do with it. He’s won three times on the soft and been placed on his only heavy track appearance. Likewise, Elemenophee ($3.70) is two wins and two minors from four soft track runs and he’s also been placed on the heavy. Professor Marx ($15) is one at a bit of odds who does have a heavy track win to his name.
Race 5 – a BM83 over 1200m – is the final leg of the early quaddie with current $4.20 race favourite (William Hill), Powerline, yet to win on the heavy but he is a two-time winner on the soft. Painte ($6.50 – William Hill) has had a sprinkling of early support and while he only has one win from five attempts on heavy, he is yet to miss a place. Shadow Lord ($8.50) and Grand Punto ($9.50) are both two-time winners on the heavy while Dragon Flyer ($12) is first-up from a spell but does have one win and two placings from five heavy track starts. Grass Cutter ($18) is a long shot in the race but has two wins in the soft and a further three wins and two minor placings from six heavy starts.
Race 6 is a BM78 handicap for the stayers over 2400m and it could turn into an absolute slog. Chris Waller has three in the race with Defrost My Heart ($4 – William Hill) and El Novio ($3.90) both well performed in the slow and heavy range. Four Carat ($21) has been unplaced in four soft starts but has two placings from four on the heavy going. Zatopaz ($6.50) and Dowdstown Charlie ($8.50) each have a heavy win against their name, while Major Major ($10) has two. Even though Dowdstown Charlie and Major Major are in the ‘non-winners’ category they might enjoy the wet on Saturday.
Race 7 (a BM92 over 1600m) is a competitive event with favourite, Sebrina ($3.60 – Sportsbet) likely to gain further support come race day. She’s racing in good form at present and her heavy form reads, two wins from three attempts. Zayam ($21) is a winner on heavy and soft and while Farolitos ($4.60) and McCreery’s ($6.00) form on the heavy is inconclusive, their soft track form reads well. They are both nice horses and if this was run on a dry, they would be closer to Sebrina in the betting.
Top weight, Elle Lou ($4.60 – Sportsbet) has been the subject of early support in Race 8 and Koby Jennings’ 2kg claim could prove vital on Saturday. She is four wins from six on the soft and although yet to win on heavy, she has been placed four times. Rustic Melody ($14), Flamboyant Lass ($4.80), Tree of Jesse ($8.50) and Lycia ($8) are all heavy track winners, in what is another competitive race.
Race 9 is a dash over 1000m and good luck if you’re still alive in the quaddie. Cheeky Babe ($3.50 – William Hill) might be the shortest way home in the quadrella but is yet to meet a heavy track in her six career starts. On the flip side, Floral Insight ($23) has had 103 overall starts with 20 on the soft and 21 on the heavy. He’s won twice on the heavy and been placed a further ten times. Allez Chival ($7.50) is second-up from a spell and a dual winner on the soft and heavy while Ms Wicked Wanda ($19) and Quell ($13) have both greeted the winners’ circle on heavy tracks.
Betting: Monitor the first five races for any patterns developing and even though it won’t be easy, try your luck with a quaddie.
