Panthers looking to progress past out-of-sorts Bulldogs

NRL Finals Week 1 – Qualifying Final – Panthers vs Bulldogs

Date and Time: Sunday September 11, 4:10pm AEST

Venue: Allianz Stadium

TV: Fox Sports, Channel 9/Gem

The last match of week one of the NRL Finals sees the Penrith Panthers take on the Canterbury Bulldogs. Recent results have seen the Bulldogs drop out of contention for the top four and now face the prospect of being eliminated in the Qualifying Final. Penrith are in fine form, have strung together a fantastic run of five straight victories. This, however, is sudden death football and anything can happen.

Neither of these sides are viewed as contenders for a place in the Grand Final. With both sides holding the longest odds on claiming the NRL title. Canterbury are currently priced at $29.00 with William Hill. Penrith are only marginally better priced at $21.00. The winner of this match will get the right to face the loser of Canberra and Cronulla. Meaning winning this week is only one small step forward.

The Panthers are heavy favourites to progress into week two of the Finals. William Hill has them priced at $1.52. A combination of their impressive form and Canterbury’s slump in form have added weight to that price. Penrith have been playing quality rugby league all season only to be denied victories by the smallest margins. At the back end of the year, however, things began to click for the Panthers as they secured results against formidable opposition.

Three straight losses for the Bulldogs will have their supporters wondering where it all went wrong. They should be settling down for a double chance match right now rather than scraping it out with a winner takes all match against Penrith. Canterbury stand at $2.71 with William Hill to claim victory and keep their Grand Final hopes alive. Without Will Hopoate and Sam Perrett, the Bulldogs will be relying on Brett Morris at full back to see them home in this fixture.

Whilst William Hill are backing Penrith to claim the win here against Canterbury. They are unable to separate the margin of victory as both a 1-12 and 13+ point win are priced at $2.90. Canterbury on the other hand stand at $3.80 for a narrow win of 1-12 points. For them to run wild against the Panthers and put 13+ points past them though the price is a staggering $7.60.

Dallin Watene Zelezniak and Josh Mansour stand as favourites for the 1st Tryscorer and Match Winner Double with William Hill. Both Panthers players are priced at $11.00 when coupled as first tryscorers with a Penrith win. The best price for a Canterbury player coupled with his side to win is Curtis Rona at $19.00. Although his price is actually better for him to score first when combined with a Penrith win which stands at $18.00.

Regardless of form, this season all comes down to this match up. The statistics cannot separate the two sides with them meeting 33 times since 1998 with one draw and 16 wins a piece. That will all change this Sunday when they clash in this Qualifying Final.
