So far in the 2016 NFL season, which of course, is only three weeks old, underdogs have had more success than favourites and some of the league’s best teams are getting points at the line in Week Three.
The third week of action began on Friday morning (AEST) with the Patriots, who were underdogs, blowing away the Texans by 27-0 with their third string quarterback at the helm, Jacoby Brissett.
On Sunday there are 14 games including last year’s Super Bowl winners. Denver, who are getting a 3.5-point head start points as they face one of the AFC’s best teams, the Cincinnati Bengals ($1.54). The Broncos are at the juicy odds of $2.57.
The Seahawks ($1.23) are favoured to bounce back and bounce back big from that defeat when they meet the San Francisco 49ers ($4.40). The line in that one is at 10 points which is the equal biggest line of the weekend, with the Cleveland Browns ($4.40) when they travel to sunny Miami to take on the Dolphins ($1.23).

As mentioned though, the underdogs are producing so far in season 2016. Here’s our best bets for the third week of the NFL:
Minnesota Vikings @ Carolina Panthers – Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte – Monday September 26 – 3:00am AEST
It won’t be easy for the Vikings to win on the road against the Carolina Panthers after being ravaged by injuries. Adding to the difficulty of the task, the Panthers have won 14 straight home games. The Vikings however, are one of the best teams in the NFC and have shown that in the opening two games.
The Vikings lose very few games by more than one score, they’ve been defeated by more than a field goal in just three of their last 25 games mainly because of their elite defence.
Minnesota ranks in the top five in both yards and points allowed over the opening two games but will have to ensure that level is matched this week, coming up against arguably the league’s best quarterback, Cam Newton.
Their own QB, Sam Bradford might not play as well as he did in Week 2, but he was terrific in his Vikings debut. Minnesota has made the impressive start of 2-0 without any production from Adrian Peterson, and they can still keep things close on Sunday without the injured running back.
I’m backing the Vikings to get within 7.0 points here and cover the line.
BEST BET: Vikings to cover the line of 7: $1.88
Oakland Raiders @ Tennessee Titans – LP Field, Nashville – Monday September 26, 3:00am AEST
The Raiders will be looking for their second road win of the season when they visit Nashville on Sunday. The Titans are coming off defeating the Lions in Detroit last week.
There’s a lot of value in taking Raiders’ at the line here, they were a 2-point underdog in their season-opening visit to New Orleans, who are probably better than Tennessee. The Raiders defeated the Saints in Week 1, and I think they can do the same to the Titans here.
Oakland look to be one of the NFL’s best offensive teams. They rank first in yards and third in points scored, and the Raiders should be able to move the ball against Tennessee. Oakland’s defence hasn’t been up to par, but that might not be a problem against the Titans, who have scored just 16 points in each game.
Oakland look like a genuine playoff contender and I’m backing them to cover the line here.
BEST BET: Oakland to cover the line of 2.0: $1.92
Pittsburgh Steelers @ Philadelphia Eagles – Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia – Monday September 26, 6:25am AEST
Although there are eight teams who’ve made perfect 2-0 starts to the NFL season, the only match-up in week three to feature two unbeaten teams is this one. The Steelers head to Philly late on Sunday afternoon in what’s unexpectedly become one of the biggest games on the upcoming schedule.
Philly couldn’t be happier with their rookie quarter-back Carson Wentz. He’s gone 2-0 and looked pretty good while doing it. Much to my dismay as I actually picked against him in this column last week. Those Bears have disappointed again. Wentz has made some history of his own by coming the fifth rookie to win his team’s first two games of the season. It’s not a bad list he’s on either – Joe Flacco, John Elway, Mark Sanchez and Ryan Leaf.
I’m going to take the Steelers in the head-to-head market here. I think the Steelers are in for a really good season, they are unbeaten despite coming through one of the toughest schedules, winning in Washington in week one and beating the Bengals last week.
Steelers running-back DeAngelo Williams leads the league with 237 yards on the ground. I’m expecting him and his team to make it 3-0 this week.
BEST BET: Steelers to win: $1.52
