Underdogs continue to get the better of favorites in the 2016 NFL season, there were nine upsets in the 14 games last week. Will we see that trend finally change in week six?
After crushing the Browns last week, the Patriots are heavily favoured ($1.27) at home against the Bengals ($3.95), the line is over at eight points. The team that the Patriots smashed last week are once again in the firing line ($3.60) when they travel to Tennessee ($1.31). The line is at 7.5 points there.
The San Francisco 49ers are friendless ($4.15) at Buffalo ($1.25), where the line is at a whopping nine points. The only away team that is favoured to win by more than a touchdown is the Pittsburgh Steelers ($1.30) when they head to sunny Miami ($3.66).
Week six kicked off on Thursday night when the Broncos travelled to San Diego. Once again there was an upset with the underdog Chargers beating reigning Super Bowl champions Denver by 21-13.
Two teams will have the bye this week (Minnesota, Tampa Bay) here are the three best bets for Week Six of the 2016 NFL season:
Philadelphia Eagles @ Washington Redskins
FedEx Field, Landover, Maryland –Monday October 17, 4:00am AEDT
The Eagles with their rookie quarterback Carson Wentz, who is yet to put a foot wrong in his first professional season, head to the nation’s capital to take on the Redskins who are on a three-game winning streak.
It’s still unclear if the Eagles are a real threat in the NFC after their loss to the Detroit Lions last week. They made key mistakes against Detroit, committing 14 penalties—twice as many as their season average and handed several giving key first downs to their opposition.
As for the Redskins there are a couple of key stats that jump off the page. They are ranked 27th in defence which will be a problem considering how well Wentz is playing.
On the other side of the ball, Philadelphia still ranks second in total defence, and they’ll cause a lot of problems for Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins, who’s thrown two touchdowns and four interceptions in three games against teams with winning records.
BEST BET: Eagles to win: $1.74
Kansas City Chiefs @ Oakland Raiders
Oakland Alameda Coliseum, California –Monday October 17 – 7:05am AEDT
Oakland have made a great start to the season, they sit 4-1 with their only loss coming to a Super Bowl contender, the Falcons. This week they host the Chiefs who are 2-2 and coming off the bye, their head coach Andy Reid has a great record coming off a week’s rest (15-2).
Oakland’s 4-1 start is no fluke, they have three road wins in the Eastern Time Zone. Although their defense has been shaky at times they have one of the NFL’s best offenses.
Kansas City’s defence has been exposed when facing teams that can score, and they’ll have a hard time keeping Oakland under 30 points on Sunday.
The visitors have a great recent record in this fixture, they are 10-3 in their last 13 games against the Raiders but history won’t count for much here as this is the best Oakland team for over a decade and I’m taking them to win.
BEST BET: Raiders to win: $2.05
Indianapolis Colts @ Houston Texans
NRG Stadium, Houston – Monday October 17, 11:30am AEDT
These two teams are only separated by one win on the standings but when you dig a little deeper it’s more about what they do without the ball that would be worrying the Colts coaching staff.
Even in their win last week, the Colts let the Bears score a season-high 23 points, and DeAndre Hopkins could have a field day against Indianapolis’ secondary. On the other side of the ball, quarterback Andrew Luck will be under constant pressure.
He was sacked five times by a bad Chicago defence and it could be even worse against Houston’s defensive front. The Texans’ two losses have come against the top teams in each conference, but they’re 3-0 at home against teams that don’t have winning records.
Just to underline the plight of the Colts defence, only New Orleans has allowed more points. Houston will be too strong at home.
