In-form Broncos set to knock Titans from NRL finals

Thu, Sep 8, 2:50pm by Christopher Duffy

Preview – Brisbane Broncos v Gold Coast Titans

Date and Time: Friday September 9, 7:50pm

Venue: Suncorp Stadium

TV: Channel 9, Fox Sports

The Gold Coast Titans will make the short trip north to face the Brisbane Broncos on Friday Night Football in Week One of the NRL Finals. At the start of the season the Titans were tipped by many to be holders of the wooden spoon not preparing for a finals match at this stage of this season. Yet here they are ready to face an in form Broncos side, who head in to the finals on the back of five straight victories.

Both sides have long odds on claiming the NRL Premiership outright heading into Week One. William Hill prices the Broncos at $8.00 while the Titans stand furthest from the top prize at $67.00. Whilst neither side is favourite to claim the title that will matter little in this fierce Queensland rivalry.

With only one victory in 14 matches at Suncorp Stadium, the Titans unsurprisingly are outsiders to claim victory and progress through the Finals. They are priced with William Hill at $4.05. Any hope that the Gold Coast has will surround the form of Jarryd Hayne and whether he can create miracles alongside his ability to remember sporting dreams.

The Broncos greatest fear will be complacency as they head into this match as significant favourites. William Hill prices them at $1.27 and their form, in particular at home, goes a long way to reinforce those odds. A late push for the top four was only denied in the last round of the regular season by the Cowboys. Brisbane should be riding a wave of confidence.

The addition of a margin with William Hill significantly increases the Titans prices. An away victory of 1-12 points stands at $5.10 with a 13+ point win at $14.00. Even the most ardent Titans supporter would be hard pushed to go against those prices. A Broncos win with a margin of 1-12 points is priced at $2.80.  A 13+ point win is the favourite at $2.12.

Heading into this Qualifying Final rumours have begun that the Broncos are trying to prise Gold Coast’s flying winger David Mead away. Mead can be pitted against his opposite man in maroon, Corey Oates for the number of tries scored. Oates is favourite to score the most of the two men priced at $2.30. For now, Mead remains a Titan and stands at $4.50 to get the best of Oates and score the most tries.

Corey Oates again tops the prices for a first Tryscorer and Match Winner Double. For Oates to score first and Brisbane to win William Hill are offering $9.00. The nearest to him are fellow Broncos Jordan Kahu ($11.00) and James Roberts ($12.00) both for Brisbane wins. The shortest odds for a Titan to score first and then his side to go on to win are Nene Macdonald and David Mead. They are both priced at $33.00.

With no second chances for the loser of this match it will all come down to who performs best on the night. Previous form and future prospects go out the window once that whistle blows.
