Germany have edge over Italy in Euro quarters

Fri, Jul 1, 10:31am by Staff Writer

Germany Euro 2016Date & Time: 5.00am AEST Sunday July 3  (Live on Bein Sports)

Venue: Stade de Bordeaux, Bordeaux

Germany are favourites to end their Italian hoodoo and book a place in the last four at Euro 2016.

The two most successful European sides face off in a mouth-watering, winner-takes-all quarter-final in Bordeaux.

In a match up that has all the ingredients to be the game of the tournament, Germany have the greater talent but Italy have already shown in this tournament that their game plan can hold up in big games.  Strap yourselves in, this could go the distance.

Sportsbet has installed Germany as $2.30 favourite to win inside the 90 minutes with the draw at $2.90 and Italy at $3.90.  The market to progress to the semi-final sees Germany at $1.52 and Italy at $2.42.

The World Champion Germans are used to winning but that’s something they’ve never been able to do in a competitive fixture against Italy. The 2012 Euro Semi Final saw the Azzurri eliminate the Germans 2-1 in Warsaw, Poland.  Moving onto this tournament and the Germans haven’t done too much wrong.

They are yet to concede a goal and seem to be peaking at the right time with their last start perhaps their best, a 3-0 win over Slovakia.

Their opponents arrived in France labelled the least talented Italian squad to go to a major tournament in 50 years. The Azzurri now find themselves 180 minutes away from the final.

Much of the praise for their unexpected run to the final eight has gone to a man who hasn’t kicked a ball, coach Antonio Conte. His tactics against Spain on Wednesday (AEST) were ingenious, pressing high and denying the defending champions the ability to play out the back whilst having Pelle man-marking Busquets.

It will be interesting to see what tactics he has in store for the gifted German midfielders.

Many pundits are tipping that the winner of this fixture will go on and win the tournament and it’s easy to see why with Joachim Loew’s team so slick going forward while the Italian’s experience at the back and brilliant counter attacking has already seen them defeat the defending champion as well as the talented Belgium.

As we’ve seen in this tournament, Italy can suffocate games if they get an early goal but Germany is the younger, fresher and more flexible team and has the ability to score more goals with a hungry Mario Gomez up front.  This could easily go to extra time and penalties but Germany will progress.

Predicted Result: Germany 1 Italy 1 (After 90 minutes) at $5.50

Best Bet: Germany to progress at $1.52
