The fixture for the inaugural AFL women’s season has been released and Fremantle have been installed as favourites to win the first AFLW premiership.
The AFL has confirmed the first AFLW season will run over eight weeks, taking in seven home and away rounds before the Grand Final is staged on Saturday March 25, which coincides with the opening round of the AFL season.
It means that while Carlton and Collingwood will open the season with a Friday night match at Olympic Park Oval on February 3, the most anticipated clash will be at the Whitten Oval the following day when the Dogs host the Dockers.
The Dockers’ two marquee players are Kara Donnellan and Kiara Bowers, while Kim Mickle, a champion Australian athlete in javelin, is also set to play.
The Bulldogs, who through former vice president Susan Alberti have led the push behind the establishment of the women’s competition, feature marquees Katie Brennan and Ellie Blackburn.
Collingwood are expected to have a big following in their debut season and are currently $6 to win the women’s premiership, the same price as Adelaide, who open their season at home to the GWS giants.
TAB have reported substantial money for Carlton to win the premiership with over 36 per cent of all money bet on the market on the Blues. The TAB have the Blues at $7.50 having put them up at $9 in opening markets.
They have Melbourne and Western Bulldogs as $4.50 equal favourites.
